The begining of the Golden age of Hollywood :1930s

In the begining of the 1930s was a decade of poltical termoil and economics problems, like the Great Deppresion, so it makes sense that the popularity of movies was going to skyrocket as more people turned to them to find an escape from the hardships of the real world. This period of time in film is most well-known for its most iconic movies: King Kong, The Wizard Of Oz, Frankenstein and Gone With The Wind. King Kong, Frankenstein and The Wizard Of Oz still, to this inspire remakes and spinoffs of their classic stories. Movies in this era lean in to fantastical elements of its stories. For example King Kong tells a story of a gigantic gorilla terrorizing New York. Frankenstein is an adaptation of the work of Mary's Shelley work under the same title. Its a story about a scientist that tries to create the perfect human, but in his quest to play God, he creates a monster. Wizard Of Oz (wich is the most watched film ever) is a musical telling a story of Dorothy, a girl from kansas, that is transported to a diffrent world where she and her new-found friends have to stop an evil witch. Gone With The Wind (the highest grossing movie of all time adjusted for inflation) is a love story of two people - a southern women named Scarlett and a cynical philliander named Rhett Butler. It is set during the American civil war. In modern times it has gathered a lot of critisism of its depiction of slavery. These movies have become some of the most influential pieces of media ever and if you were to erase them from history cinema would look vastly different.

  1. There have been attempts to cancel Gone With the Wind from cinemas on the grounds you mention - racism, sexism and other isms. I think we should still watch it as a testimony of what the world was like and how people saw it at the time it was made.
