Boat accident kills 76 people in Nigeria

This week following Nigeria's biggest flood in over a decade, a boat boarded with women and children trying to get to safety from the rising waters, capsized. The accident left 76 out of 85 people on board the boat, dead. Since the flood, caused by the overflowing of the Niger river began, around 300 people have died and around 100,000 have been left without homes. Relatives of the victims can't even bury their bodies because there is no dry areas left near.

This is obviously very sad and shocking, but in my opinion it is a sign of a larger problem, that is global warming. The amount of extreme, supposed once in a lifetime kind of weather catastrophies in the last couple years is staggering. The floods will cause Nigeria to have food shortages, when they were already struggling with malnourishment and hunger among their population. The European union has provided Nigeria with 80,000€ of financial relief, wich probably won't be enough to cover a fraction of the damages caused by the flood. This will be a very hard time in Nigerian history, that may lead to many more deaths.

  1. Luckily, Nigeria is not the poorest country in Africa and it will hopefully recover. If a disaster strikes elsewhere (South Sudan or DRC), the long-term consequences could be much worse.
