The first films with a story.
In late 19th century and early 20th century, films started to get longer and began telling stories. The Great Train Robbery made by Edwin S. Porter is considered to be the first narative fictional film ever. It is also the first in the genre of American Western. It had a runtime of, at the time impressive, 10 minutes and contained 14 scenes. In that time the first ever science fiction movie was created. A trip to the moon created by french filmmaker George Méliès tells a story of humans landing on the moon and being abducted by aliens, known as Selenites. They manage to escape and land in the ocean where they are celebrated as famed explorers. The film is one of the first ever to use practical effects and ilusions. These films had a huge impact on the industry moving forward, and paved the way for more ambitious filmmakers.

I guess people got excited about the very fact that something was moving on screen, not like today's spoiled audiences.
